Description
Desert Resilience is an image created for the 2020 Newcastle Writers Festival Exhibition in response to the book The White Girl by Tony Birch. Initially this image began as a relatively literal depiction of a deliberately damaged object forcibly embedded in desert sand. Beside this object were the arcs created by the metronomic action of firmly rooted desert grass swept by the wind. These fugitive marks were being amplified by the raked, pre-dusk, burnt orange light.

As the work evolved, however, it ultimately became focused on more abstract notions of the resilient spirit of the book’s main character and the power of deep connection with place.
