LUMINOSITY

EXHIBITION NOTES
LUMINOSITY: Inscription of time by light

'To notice the rhythm and visual poetry of direct and reflected sunlight, then observe its new location no more than a minute later, is to be aware that nothing is static.'

In this exhibition, photographic compositions and digital animations are constructed that emphasise the impact of subtle changes in light occurring over time, inviting a viewer to meditate on concepts related to time and mortality.

The artworks are mainly in the form of multi-panel video compositions, but also included are digital prints and a large-scale projection. The projected work is made up of 70 panels, each showing different aspects and time slices of abstract details of a still life. These details are slowly changing due to the influence of direct and reflected light shifting as the sun passes across the sky. Another work invites us to contemplate geological time as we observe a time-lapse triptych of a snow-capped mountain.

The exhibition also features a wall of small photographic prints depicting miniscule, coloured cubes swept by a single vertical moving shadow (cast by the sun over a number of seasons). This particular work honours the cumulative effect of spending a small amount of time on a range of activities chosen for their personal significance.

The entry zone of the ‘Luminosity’ exhibition. This area consists of 2 wall mounted videos placed opposite a mural of 364 digital prints representing approximately a year of daily activities. In the video works we see coloured cubes (each with a particular significance) being swept by a moving shadow that draws attention to the rotation of the earth and its transit around the sun. A viewer is invited to reflect on the rhythm of this, and the personal and seasonal implications of such journey. Further information re this work may be found on the ‘Cube Diary’ webpage.
